PsychKit™ Compliment Ping-Pong
Who Is This For?
This is an exercise for anyone who feels anxious or awkward when receiving compliments. It’s a key part of social anxiety, where a positive interaction can *increase* distress.
This tool helps you practice two skills in a safe environment:
- Timing/Reciprocity: Practicing the “rhythm” of a conversation.
- Prosocial Response: Practicing *how* to accept a compliment gracefully, rather than dismissing it or deflecting it.
The Science Behind It (Exposure & Skills)
This game is a form of Social Skills Training combined with Gamified Exposure.
1. Skills Training: People with social anxiety often use “safety behaviors” (like deflecting compliments) that backfire, making the other person feel awkward and confirming the anxiety. This game teaches the alternative: a simple, warm, prosocial response (like “Thank you!”).
2. Exposure: By repeatedly “receiving” compliments in a game format, you are gently exposing yourself to the trigger, which can help desensitize the initial anxious reaction over time.
