This is a structured exercise for consenting partners to practice non-sexual, non-demand touching.
The goal is not arousal or performance. The goal is to reduce anxiety and focus only on sensory awareness (what you feel, see, smell, and hear).
You both have the right to stop at any time, for any reason, without explanation.
Partner B (Receiver): Share what you noticed. Use “I” statements. (e.g., “I felt…”, “I noticed…”, “I liked…”).
Partner A (Giver): Your only job is to listen. Do not ask questions or defend your touch. Just receive their feedback. Thank them.
💡 The Why & How
“Sensate Coach” is a PG-rated educational tool based on Sensate Focus. This is a foundational technique developed by Masters and Johnson to help partners rebuild intimacy and overcome sexual anxieties.
Who Is This For?
This tool is for consenting adult partners who want to improve their physical intimacy, communication, and comfort. It is especially helpful for individuals or couples experiencing:
- Anxiety related to touch or intimacy.
- A “disconnect” or lack of physical (non-sexual) closeness.
- Performance anxiety.
- Difficulty communicating needs and sensations.
The Science Behind It (PG-Only)
The core idea is to remove all pressure and goals from physical touch. When partners feel pressure to “perform,” they can experience anxiety, which blocks natural intimacy. Sensate Focus removes this pressure.
- Non-Demand Touching: By forbidding specific outcomes, the exercises remove the “goal” of touch. This dramatically reduces performance anxiety.
- Mindful Sensory Awareness: The focus shifts from “doing” to “feeling.” You are instructed to just *notice* sensations (temperature, texture, pressure) without judging them. This grounds you in the present moment.
- Structured Communication: The “Giver” and “Receiver” roles, along with the debrief, provide a safe and structured way to talk about touch, which is often difficult for couples.
This step-by-step process retrains the brain to associate touch with safety, curiosity, and pleasure, rather than anxiety and pressure.
