About the scale and scoring

IDEAS rates disability in four domains: Self-care, Interpersonal Activities, Communication and Understanding, and Work. Each is scored 0 to 4: 0 none, 1 mild, 2 moderate, 3 severe, 4 profound. Sum the four items for the Total Disability Score (TDS). Add a Duration of Illness (DOI) score by total duration: less than 2 years add 1, 2 to 5 years add 2, 6 to 10 years add 3, over 10 years add 4. Global Disability Score (GDS) = TDS + DOI. Percent bands: 0% none, 1–6 less than 40%, 7–13 equals 40–70%, 14–19 equals 71–99%, 20 equals 100%. Minimum 40% is the usual eligibility threshold.
